SEO has Shifted, and It’s Time to Catch Up. Here are 5 Changes to Make in 2026 to Move from Traditional SEO to the AI-SEO Era

Understanding new models of SEO/AEO (Search Engine Optimization/Answer Engine Optimization) is more important than ever if you want your website to be discovered online.

SEO has always been a rather annoying, shifty game, subject to ever-changing rules, thanks to big tech. Many solo and small business owners are reluctant to invest in proper SEO and AEO strategies because it’s not always easy to see a tangible result (and it takes time). Plus, most freelance and agency SEO/AEO services cost several thousand dollars per year.

At a high level, successful SEO has meant having a good blend of:

  1. Technical standards (several, including site speed), which Shopify and Squarespace mostly fulfill automatically via their platforms

  2. Content structure and taxonomy, including keywords

  3. Content quality and originality

  4. Age of website (older and more trusted websites always fare better … as in years, not months)

  5. Backlinks (other sites that link to yours, especially reputable media outlets) and other authority-establishing measures

  6. Content freshness (this is why we urge all business owners to have a blog and keep it going!)

However, it’s critical to understand how the SEO landscape has shifted over the past year and what you need to do now in 2026 to get more visibility on the internet.

Thanks to advancements in AI, the focus of SEO has shifted from "ranking for keywords" to "optimizing for answers." This new era is often referred to as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) or AEO (Answer Engine Optimization).

As you might have noticed in your own search results, AI models now answer questions directly on the search page, often citing various sources.

Every business should have a goal of being cited in those answers.

To have even a chance of that, you must first have a solid flow of fresh content (blog posts or product/service instances) on your site (weekly is best). Whether you create the content (or hire us to), this is one of the most important foundations of SEO/AEO strategy.

Once you have a solid flow of fresh content, here’s a summary on how the SEO focus has changed and what to do, using a random product (candles) as an example (but the same concept applies to products and services).

1. Shift From Keywords to Entities and Intent

In the past, you might write a blog post targeting a keyword phrase like "best candles." Now, AI understands the intent and entities behind the search.

  • Be Original: Instead of simply repeating keywords, you must prove your site is an authority on the "entity" (the topic of candles), plus a strong differentiator on why your candles should be chosen over other options.

  • Depth Matters: Build topical depth. Have content about candles, but also everything related, such as candle materials, candle designs, best candle gift ideas, best candles for people with health issues, candle safety (I could go on!) to show the AI that you are a comprehensive source.

2. OptimizE for Citations instead of just Rankings

In AI-driven search, the winner is the site the AI cites as a source of information. To increase your chances of your fresh content being cited:

  • Front-Load: Use "Front-Loaded" content. Answer the main question in the first paragraph or even the first sentence of your blog post or product description. “Our candles are the best choice for these 3 reasons.”

  • Format for Machines: Use clear headings, bullet points, and tables. AI models "scrape" and "chunk" data; if your data is in a clean table, the AI is much more likely to pull it into an answer box. For example, create a table listing various candle materials with pros and cons for each, or burn-time comparisons, or your top 5 best-selling scents with the ingredients.

3. The Importance of "Information Gain"

AI excels at summarizing existing information. If your article just repeats what is already said in other sources, the AI will summarize it, and users won't click your link.

  • Show Value: You must provide Information Gain—something unique that the AI doesn't already have in its training data.

  • What to Add: Original content, research, and angles that differentiate you/your business.

    • Personal experience or first-hand case studies. For candles, this could include written reviews, user-generated images, and stories (“My mother passed down the tradition of using xyz candles on this holiday” or “My fiance filled the space with your candles and proposed”).

    • Unique opinions, research, or controversial takes. Whatever it takes to sound like the ultimate authority on candles, use it!

4. EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) is More Critical Than Ever

With the web being flooded by AI-generated "slop," search engines are desperate for human signals.

  • Author Authority: Blog posts benefit from a real human byline with a bio and links to social profiles. If you’re a solo business that doesn’t shield your name, that includes LinkedIn.

  • Brand Presence: Mention your brand on podcasts, forums like Reddit, Quora, and news sites. AI models crawl these "public squares" to decide who is a trusted name in the industry. For candles, subscribe to (or hire us to monitor) HARO and use every opportunity to gain free media exposure. Scour Facebook communities, Reddit, or other forums for opportunities to mention your candles. Ask complementary businesses to feature your candles in their content (paid or free).

5. Technical SEO: Feed the Bots

Technical SEO is no longer just about site speed; it's about making your site "readable" for LLMs (Large Language Models).

  • Structured Data: Using Schema Markup (Product, FAQ, Organization) is critical.

  • LLMs.txt: A new standard where an LLM text file is sent specifically to tell AI crawlers which parts of your site are most important for them to learn from.

  • Site Speed is still very important, though. Shopify and Squarespace are always evolving and improving, but there’s a clear winner when it comes to site speed and integrated technical SEO. It’s important to weigh the benefits of each platform against your business’s unique needs, but if you have any questions about which platform is best, contact us for a free consultation.
