Using AI for Social Media in 2026: Our Results and Recommendations
Most business owners, particularly new solopreneurs, bristle at the phrase social media.
“What do I post? How often? Why bother? Do I have to pay for this? It seems easy enough, I’ll do it myself.” (Famous last words!)
We get it. But research patterns don’t lie. Strangers interested in your offerings, whether products or services, will almost always check out your social media. And here’s the impression:
0 posts in the past 2 months: This business looks closed or inept. Even if they loved your website, it’s an Unlikely Follow. Lost opportunities abound.
1 - 2 posts/month: Shows that at least the “lights are on” and it’s a legitimate business. Possible Follow, especially if it’s niche.
1 post/week: This business is real and trying to attract people. Possible Follow.
3 + posts/week: Clearly an active and thriving business. Probable Follow. Momentum matters … more followers will beget even more followers.
How AI Fits In
As an agency, we’ve spent the past several months examining dozens of AI social media platforms, narrowing them down, and spending money actively testing three leading tools across different business types.
To be clear, we weren’t testing ChatGPT for social media post ideas and copy … we looked at tools that of course do all of that plus the work of linking, hashtagging, tone-setting, a variety of post types, usage of the website’s existing images and video, image/video AI creation, and actual, reliable posting. In other words, multiple social media functions on autopilot.
The result?
AI social media tools can be effective — but only in the right context.
Here’s what we found.
Where AI Social Media Tools Excel: Product-Based Businesses
For product businesses with multiple and/or changing products, AI social media tools are an excellent option to increase post frequency.
When a business has a robust and actively changing product catalog, AI tools can:
Pull from product names, descriptions, and categories
Generate a steady stream of promotional, educational, and lifestyle posts
Rotate products automatically so content stays fresh
Maintain posting consistency without manual scheduling every day
For these businesses, AI tools create momentum. They remove the “what do we post today?” problem and replace it with a reliable, steady stream of content.
This is especially valuable for:
Ecommerce brands; boutiques and online shops
Brands with seasonal or rotating inventory
Businesses that struggle to post consistently
The Important Caveat: AI Still Needs Human Direction
Even in the best-case scenarios, we’ve found that AI social media tools are not quite set-and-forget.
They still require:
Brand voice adjustments
Caption refinement
Image and video refinement (for AI-created images and videos, there was a mix of pretty-darn-good to outright bizarre)
Strategic post selection oversight
Campaign-level thinking
Comment moderation
Left completely unattended, AI-generated social media content can become:
Generic
Repetitive
Slightly off-brand
Too salesy or vague
Outright wacky at times
How We Help Bridge the Gap Between Human and AI-Led Social Media
As an agency, we can help businesses with oversight:
Select the best tool(s)
Edit and refine content before publishing
Align AI content with launches, promotions, and campaigns
Ensure posts reflect real customer behavior and brand values
For clients who invest at the Professional level, comment moderation
Real-life example: At the time of this article, one client with a newer store on Shopify with over 1,000 products pays $39/month for 2-3 posts/day using our recommended tool of choice, plus our small Oversight Fee (we check weekly to see what it’s planned on its own, and adjust and/or create more custom posts for 30 - 45 minutes). The posts are fairly standard fare, but the algorithm is definitely being fed, and you can see the momentum building.
Where AI Social Media Tools Fell Short
While AI performed well for product-heavy brands, we did not find quite the same value for:
Service-based businesses
High-ticket or luxury brands
Personal brands
Businesses built on trust, expertise, or relationships
Why AI Struggles
Service and luxury businesses rely on:
Nuance
Authority
Storytelling
Emotional connection
Personal credibility
If the business didn’t have enough website content (eg. blog articles) to pull from, that made the problem worse.
AI-generated social content in these cases often felt:
Overly generic
Too promotional, too quickly
Lacking depth or originality
Detached from real-world experience
Our Recommendation for Services & Luxury Brands
For these businesses, we strongly recommend a more human-led social media approach. AI tools can still be used, but the amount of oversight and crafting is increased.
That means:
Thoughtful content strategy
Intentional storytelling with non-AI video
Original insights and opinions
Real behind-the-scenes content
Relationship-driven engagement
AI can still play a supporting role — for brainstorming, outlines, or repurposing — but it should not be the primary content engine.
The Bottom Line for 2026
AI social media tools are neither good nor bad. They’re context-dependent. Used correctly, AI can dramatically reduce effort and increase consistency. Used incorrectly, it can dilute your brand.
We believe that AI/Human Oversight split for product brands can be 80/20, but for services or luxury brands, it’s more like 40/60.
With technology ever-changing, we’ll reevaluate AI social media tools again for 2027.
